Öte yandan günümüzde dillerin evrensel özellikleri üzerinde önemle durulmaktadır. Çeviri yapılabilmesi de büyük ölçüde bu özelliklerle açıklanmaktadır. Temeldeki bu ayrılık en belirgin biçimde iki dilin tümce kuruluşuna yansımıştır. Türkçe tümceler ilke olarak özne-nesne-yüklem SOV düzeninde yapılandıkları halde İngilizce tümceler özne-yüklem-nesne SVO düzenindedir. Çeviri yapan öğrenciye öncelikle bu temel ayrıntının sezdirilmesi gerekir. Bu ayrına İngilizce tümcelerde sözcük sıralarının değişmesinden ileri gelmiştir.
